Historical Event on 1/26/1950
India became a Republic within the British Commonwealth and the Indian Air Force dropped its ""Royal"" prefix. At this time, it possessed six fighter squadrons of Spitfires, Vampires and Tempests, operating from Kanpur, Poona, Ambala and Palam, one B-24 bomber squadron, one C-47 Dakota transport squadron, one AOP flight, a communications squadron at Palam and a growing training organisation.

11/15/1913	Ravindranath Tagore (1861-1941), received the message that he was awarded with Noble Prize in literature for his collection of poems ""Gitanjali"" . He was the first Indian to be awarded with Nobel Prize. (13 or 15)
5/6/1946	Bhulabhai Desai, great politician, passed away.
8/23/1933	Mahatma Gandhi was released from government detention in the Poona Civil Hospital after doctors warned that his fast was endangering his life. Gandhi, who undertook the fast eight days ago in protest over being arrested again by British authorities, weighed 90 pounds at the time of his release. There was considerable speculation over what the nationalist leader would do upon regaining his strength, but the common assumption was that he would be arrested again by the British authorities if he resumed his civil disobedience.
