| 8/30/1979 | Earl Louis Mountbatten of Burma, a World War II hero, last British Viceroy in India and the first Governor General of independent India, was killed when Irish terrorists exploded his family fishing boat off the coast of Ireland. The Provisional wing of the Irish Republican Army immediately took credit for the killing, which it described as 'an execution' designed to further 'the noble struggle to drive the British intruders out of our native land'. |

| 1/23/1975 | Omeo Kumar Das, one of the great patriots of Assam, passed away at the age of 81. He selflessly worked for the tea plantation workers and made efforts to get them better living standards. He translated Gandhiji's autobiography ""My Experiments with Truth"" in Assamese language. |

| 6/9/1964 | Lal Bahadur Shastri became the second Prime Minister of India when the country was shocked of Jawaharlal Nehru's death and Indo-China war. Shastri gave the quotation ""Jai Jawan Jai Kisan"" which motivated the war-affected Indians to boost their morale. He remained in this office till he died on January 11, 1966 at Taskent. In his cabinet, Indira Gandhi served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting. |
